Honey is not just a sweetener. It’s for your health. All natural, with many health benefits, honey is truly a miracle health food. It has been used for centuries not only as a food, but also as a medicine as well as for skin care. Honey’s super health powers are from a multitude of nutrients it contains – carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and amino acids. In addition, honey is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and contains no fat, cholesterol or sodium. It is advisable not to give honey to babies younger than a year old. Honey may (rarely) contain spores that can lead to infant botulism, even though it is completely safe for older children and adults. 11 health benefits of raw honey 1. ENERGY - Before your next workout, try having a spoon of honey for a great energy boost. Honey is 80% carbohydrate, which consists of four different natural sugars. The different properties of these sugars cause them to release their energy at different rates – for example, the glucose gives one an instant boost, while the fructose releases its energy more slowly. The result is that honey gives a sustained energy boost, ensuring that you’ll have a great workout and not run out of steam half way through. Similarly, if you experience a mid morning slump, a spoon of honey in a glass of warm water, or just as is, will give you a great pick-me-up. 2. REGULATE BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS - Because the sugars in honey are absorbed into the bloodstream at different rates, honey helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. This makes honey a healthier alternative to refined white sugar for sweetening your tea and coffee. It’s also perfect for use on cereals (avoid the cereals already made with refined sugar), on breads, pancakes (it’s a healthier choice than maple syrup), muffins, etc. You can also use it in baking instead of sugar. Having said this, diabetics should still use honey in moderation, as with all sugar containing foods. 3. BOOST IMMUNE SYSTEM - Honey has been found to help boost the immune system in a number of ways. Honey has natural antioxidant and antibacterial properties that benefit the digestive system, which plays a major role in the health of the immune system. Newer research has also found that honey has natural probiotic properties which further boost its immune boosting abilities. These probiotic compounds are very heat sensitive, making it all the more important to choose unheated (unpasteurised) honey. For a healthy start to the day, and a great kick start for the immune system, have a teaspoon of honey and the freshly squeezed juice of half a lemon in a big glass of warm water. 4. HEAL WOUNDS - Honey has been used for centuries to help speed the healing of wounds. Ancient Egyptian texts mention its healing abilities. The Egyptians also used it in the embalming process to help prevent putrification. The natural antibacterial properties, and the fact that it is slightly acidic, help honey reduce inflammation and infection and reduce the time it takes for wounds to heal. It’s traditionally been used in many cultures to help heal leg ulcers and bed sores, but it has the ability to speed the healing of any wounds. Studies have shown that honey can slow the growth of the bacteria S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, commonly found in hospitals, that cause infection in wounds. 5. ANTI-ALLERGENIC - Many people suffer from hay fever and allergies at the change of the seasons, particularly in spring and fall. Honey has been found to help relieve the symptoms of these allergies and help the body build up a resistance to them. Honey bees bring pollen into their hives for food and raw honey contains traces of pollen. It is thought that by eating locally produced honey the body is exposed to these pollen traces and builds up a natural resistance to them. This is exactly the same principle as that used by homeopathic medicine, where the body is introduced to minute amounts of an allergen or toxin and automatically starts producing antibodies to counteract them. 6. SORE THROAT REMEDY - Honey helps to soothe and heal sore throats. Honey has excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that make it an effective remedy for sore throats. Honey also contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, an effective antidote to the bacteria that cause sore throats, like streptococcus. If you have a sore throat, try allowing a spoonful of honey to slowly dissolve in your mouth and trickle down your throat. You can also make a gargle with honey, lemon juice, salt (just a pinch) and water. 7. COUGH REMEDY - Studies have shown that honey is effective in helping to reduce the severity of coughs caused by colds and flu. A number of studies with children have found honey to be just as effective as, and in some instances superior to, over the counter cough remedies, with the added benefit that there are no negative side effects. Parents reported that giving their children a spoonful of honey helped to significantly reduce coughing and improve sleeping. Allowing the honey to slowly dissolve in the mouth and trickle down the throat, rather than just swallowing it immediately, gives the best results. 8. MEMORY BOOST - Honey has been found to assist in boosting the memory of senior citizens. The numerous antioxidants in honey appear to help slow and reduce the damage to, and loss of, brain cells brought about by aging. Honey also helps the body to absorb calcium, which is vital for nerve health and the transmission of nerve impulses. As the mean age of the population increases and the nutritional content of foods declines, honey could play an important role in helping to slow and prevent the onset of dementia and memory loss. 9. SLEEP AID - Struggling to fall asleep? Try some honey. Honey helps the body to produce serotonin, the ‘happy hormone’. Serotonin is converted by the brain into melatonin, a hormone that is important in the control of the duration and quality of sleep. Honey also contains many amino acids, including tryptophan, which is converted to serotonin by the brain, further increasing the production of melatonin. It’s not an old wives tale that a glass of warm milk and honey before bed will help you have a good night’s sleep. If that’s not possible, why not try a spoonful of honey? 10. ANTI-CANCER - Honey has been found to help prevent cancer and even to help treat cancer. Honey contains many potent antioxidant compounds that help to protect the cells and prevent cancer. Honey has even been shown to inhibit the growth and spread of cancer cells. Studies have shown that honey can assist in the treatment of certain cancers, like prostate, bladder, endometrial, kidney, skin, cervical, oral and bone cancer, by inhibiting the growth of tumours. Many people are aware that cancers feed on sugar, which should therefore be avoided, but research has shown that this does not apply to honey. 11. SKIN CARE - Honey has been used for centuries as a beauty aid and to smooth and soften skin, reducing the signs of aging. The natural antioxidants in honey make it a great anti-aging aid, while the antibacterial properties help to cleanse the pores. This helps to reduce acne and spots. In addition, honey naturally moisturizes the skin, giving it a youthful glow. Try a mask of honey and oatmeal for the ultimate pampering, or simply apply a thin layer of honey to damp skin and leave on for 30 minutes.
